St Mary's Underpass

St Mary's Underpass is below the main thoroughfare from the northern to southern side of the New England highway running though the heart of Warwick.

FKG Civil was engaged by Roadtek to construct the bulk and detailed concrete works.  The project encompassed the north and south entrance ways, also including the footings, base slab and the Bebo Arches for the main tunnel section. The tunnel also features 4m high cast concrete retaining walls, entrance stairs and lift shafts.

With up to 3000 vehicles per day crossing overhead it was a high profile site in Warwick.  Deep excavations at either end of the tunnel limited the working space for concrete pours, craning and framework.

Detailed planning and logistics management were critical in ensuring safe and effective delivery of the project on such a confined site.  The site team were continually reviewing and monitoring work to ensure that safety, traffic management and construction practices were to the highest standard.

The project was completed in December 2009 within program and budget whilst meeting the high Roadtek standards set.

St Mary's Underpass provides a safe passage for the St Mary's School students and general public to safely cross this busy road.
