Hastings Deering Industrial Park

Hastings Deering engaged FKG to build a specialist workshop facility in Mackay to cater for the 797series coal mine dump truck maintenance. The project was fully documented and the initial construction period was 52 weeks however additional works were added to the contract.

The building itself incorporates state of the art facilities including office and amenities to service each area, sandblast and spraypaint booths, washdown facilities making use of recirculating and purified water, small scale oil refining unit on site to salvage oil, heavy machinery display area (platform area) and extensive landscaping. A feature of the workshop is the massive travelling overhead cranes which were installed to allow for servicing of the machinery. Integrated into the design is also large vertical bi-folding concertina doors sized at 10m high x 9m wide, these permit for the partitioning off the large areas.

The construction of the industrial park included major civil components. This included, large quantities of imported fill to raise the site reduced levels, bulk earthworks, expansive areas of heavy duty concrete pavement and installation of retention basin.

During the initial stages of construction we faced considerable difficulties with the weather as at this time the Mackay region was experiencing continuous rainfall and flash flooding, this added pressure to the construction program. FKG employed extra staff and worked extended hours to complete the project in a timely manner.

Another challenge was the sheer size of the building; this made it extremely crucial to let the subcontract packages as soon as possible to ensure minimal time delays. Structural Steel was a major issue as it was already a time of steel shortages throughout Queensland. FKG worked closely with the architect to counteract this issue and pre-ordered the structural steel prior to the commencement of any site works.

Hastings Deering Industrial Park adds to the Mackay region portfolio.
