After spending over 30 years in their existing premises APN newspapers realised that local Toowoomba newspaper, The Chronicle needed a fresh new space where ideas could grow and staff could keep up with the fast pace environment of 24/7 news coverage. After investigating numerous potential sites for the new building it was decided that the Neil St location owned by FK Gardner and Sons would be ideal.
The Chronicle approached FKG to manage both the development and construction process with the building design contract undertaken by FKG Design and FKG Building constructing the building with a tight deadline to complete the property prior to Christmas.
The new headquarters comprises of 1400m2 of open office space and an additional 800m2 of undercroft car parking which was created through utilising the existing slope of the land instead of cutting and filling the block. The open plan office design was formed to facilitate a cooperative working environment required in a newspaper and to create a brighter workspace space with plenty of natural lighting. Due to the large emphasis on creating 'green' buildings in today's society there are also a number of energy efficient methods utilised throughout including, energy efficient and motion - sensor lighting, thermo reflective glazing on the windows and energy efficient air conditioning.
Throughout the construction process the FKG team worked effectively with The Chronicle and APN teams. The Chronicle General Manager Rohan Gosstray has expressed how pleased he was with the final product and how professional the entire FKG team operated throughout the entire process.
