The FKG Group was contracted by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to complete the detailed concrete works for St Mary’s Underpass – a pedestrian route beneath the main thoroughfare of the New England Highway in the heart of Warwick. The project encompassed the north and south entrance ways, footings, base slab and BEBO arches for the main tunnel section. High-cast concrete retaining walls, entrance stairs and lift shafts were designed to achieve tolerance fits between the vertical lift shaft surfaces and the steel assembly.

With an average of 3,000 vehicles per day travel on the road overhead, works were conducted in two stages, with the FKG Group project team ensuring that two lanes of traffic could remain open at all times – avoiding significant disruption to traffic flow. Additionally, deep excavations at either end of the tunnel provided a limited working space for concrete pours, craning and framework. This, combined with the high volume of passing traffic, meant that detailed planning, traffic management and logistics were critical in ensuring timely and safe project delivery.
