A new look for the Mort Estate Hotel in Toowoomba

28th May 2019

In late 2018, the FKG Group completed a modern office conversion and refurbishment for the Toowoomba based Mort Estate Hotel. Engaged by Australian cattle management company Mort & Co, the FKG Group project team were tasked with taking the beautiful heritage listed hotel, built in 1904 and previously operating as the Bellevue Hotel until 2016, into the 21st century whilst retaining its heritage features, traditional structure and exterior.

With the hotel located in the unofficial suburb of ‘Mort Estate’, owner Charlie Mort’s family heritage in the area proved a nice fit, however, it was the size of the property, accessible location and opportunity for expansion that were the main reasons that he decided to purchase the hotel and refurbish it into offices.

Project Manager Ken Burton said the building was previously the central hub for entertainment in Toowoomba, with over a decade of memories made in the hotel. “This is a building that was considered iconic in the area, so it was important to preserve its history whilst creating a new and modern space for its current owners.”

The FKG Group’s renovation work to the heritage listed building included an extension to both the ground and second levels, a functional interior refit, new stylish reception, contemporary kitchen facilities, and on-site parking for up to 43 employees.

Working with local company NRG Services, for the electrical and mechanical component of the refurbishment, the team worked together on the full design of lighting, power, communications and security systems. The team were also responsible for upgrading the main distribution board and installing carpark and security lighting to ensure safe access for office employees.
“With an understanding of the importance of maintaining the integrity of the building, we carefully selected additional lighting to appropriately reflect and pair with the heritage listed building’s style, merging contemporary appeal with a timeless look,” said Ken.

The complex now has a gross space of 1,000m2 and has created additional business opportunities and convenience for the owners and surrounding commercial properties.
