The Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) contracted the FKG Group to perform the vertical expansion over the original, unlined ‘Cell A’ at Bedford Street Landfill. The site includes the Council’s main landfill and is therefore a key element in the TRC waste management strategy.
Prior to project commencement, the landfill was licensed to accept between 100,000 and 200,000 tonnes per annum of domestic waste. To cater for waste disposal requirements in the short to medium term, an expansion to the landfill was required to benefit the community.
The FKG Group performed works in an operational environment and were required to consider environmental sustainability elements. This expansion was the first major vertical expansion conducted in Australia, which has extended the usable life of the facility and improved the regional council’s amenities.
