The FKG Group was engaged by Project Services for stage one and two of the construction works at the iconic heritage listed Fortitude Valley Police Station.
Stage one comprised the construction of a two-level underground carpark, police station and cells to the ground floor, and a Criminal Investigation Branch to the second floor, while stage two incorporated the refurbishment of the existing police station for administration and conference rooms.
Throughout the project, the team were conscious of the building’s historical significance and ensured its heritage was preserved by utilising a mixture of coloured polished blocks, metal cladding and painted render on the external façade. Retrofitted aluminium windows were replaced with timber sash windows to match the original heritage windows, 700m2 of asbestos filled ceiling was replaced with a new ceiling to match the original design, and the original terrazzo flooring was repaired and restored to its original form.
Consulting with nearby businesses also ensured every effort was made to minimise noise, vibration, dust and disruption throughout the project’s construction, in particular during the removal of approximately 7000m3 of hard rock.
