The Pleasant Hills and Pine Ridge Dams projects involved the construction of two 200 megalitre earth embankment dams with sand filter cores and HDPE liners. The dams were constructed by the FKG Group on behalf of Santos to allow coal seam gas (CSG) waste water from the Fairview gas fields to be stored for desalination at a later date. The remote project site presented significant challenges in that there was insufficient construction water available. With an average daily consumption of 700,000 litres required by the project team, water had to be carted in and stored on-site.
Due to the low-grade roads in the area and recent storms, site access was also limited, forcing the cessation of works on a number of occasions. Nevertheless, taking into account the resultant agreed EOTs, the dams were delivered on time and on budget with no safety incidents and the achievement of all quality assurance targets.
