Civil and construction contractors the FKG Group have fast-tracked design and construction works, completing the Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport ahead of its scheduled opening in November 2014.
The Wellcamp airport terminal project, which has been built on 12 metres of fill to allow jet-capable access on and off the runway, consisted of the installation of structural steel, tilt panels and roof components.
The FKG Group Site Manager, James Lunn said, “Completing this project was quite a feat; the Wellcamp site was similar to working on a remote site with no essential services such as water and permanent power. We undertook the entire construction process from generator sourced power.”
Throughout the majority of the project life project earth works continued 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
“Due to the high number of trades, equipment, machinery, vehicles and speed of works, the site landscape was ever-changing. This made accessing the site a logistical challenge, which meant we had to be flexible with site access; namely building access roads around the sealing of the tarmac.”
The FKG Group delivered on their commitment to securing local content for the project, with many local sub-contractors engaged in project works.
“Despite the short time-frame for delivery and a number of logistical challenges our relationships with our various sub-contractors and Wagners enabled construction efficiencies and safety to be maintained which resulted in a great outcome and timely build,” Mr Lunn commented.
The terminal build includes check-in bays, reception desks, front and back-of-house baggage handling areas, a food court, lounge areas, retail shops and amenities.
“The internal finishes have seen the architect’s vision of a contemporary, high-end terminal interior come to life. The décor and modern construction will appeal to a corporate and FIFO market and will help to position Wellcamp as the airport of choice in the region,” Mr Lunn said.
