Building the future, with tomorrow’s industry leaders

8th October 2020

The FKG Group Construction team is currently working on the Palmview State and Special School, Baringa State Secondary College and Gainsborough State School (Pimpama).  As part of the FKG Group’s commitment to the Local Benefits Test and Best Practice Principles they have been working with the Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) to facilitate on-site work experience for their Year 10 school-based trainees, all of whom are based at one of these schools.

As part of the program, Andy Baxter, Senior Business Development Manager for the FKG Group, and the respective Project Manager’s delivered an in-depth presentation covering the scope of works for each project and talked about the various career paths within the construction industry.  Several students attended and were encouraged to seize the opportunity to apply for one of 12 work experience positions available.  Interviews were conducted and the successful candidates were then partnered with a mentor from key trades they were interested in.  Being paired with a mentor gave them the opportunity to learn directly from an experienced operator, while building valuable relationships and networks for the future.

The feedback received from both students and mentors was extremely positive, with students saying it was an invaluable experience to gain a first-hand introduction to what is it really like to work on a live site, while being part of a team building the new schools in their local areas, which created a great sense of pride and purpose.

Although this exercise was part of the FKG Group’s contract requirements, many found it so rewarding that the Construction team are now looking to introduce this as part of the community commitment on future projects.
