FKG Group’s Hughenden Airport Rehabilitation project has recently taken out the 2015 AustStab Award of Excellence for Pavement Recycling in Local Government.

FKG Group’s Business Development Manager – Civil, Chris Safonoff said, “We are thrilled with the win. Congratulations goes to all project team members involved including Project Manager, Simon Weier. The award is testament to Simon’s commitment to project and service excellence and the project team’s high performance throughout the programme.”

Simon Weier also acknowledged the importance of the award, “This is a great achievement for the project team, who aimed to develop a strong relationship with the client from the beginning. Our focus was to also develop a sustainable environmental management plan for the project and produce considerable environmental benefits including spoil-neutral completion.”

The FKG Group was engaged by Flinders Shire Council to rehabilitate the runway, taxiway and parking apron following the 2012 devastating floods which caused saturation damage to the runway. The $6.5million contract also included the full installation of aeronautical ground lighting.

A notable achievement for the project included the commission of Foamed Bitumen Stabilisation (FBS) pavement material with recycling of the existing pavement material. This decreased the reliance on scarce local quarried material.

Article Note: In 2014, the FKG Group, in conjunction with Flinders Shire Council, co-authored a technical engineering paper which was delivered at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia State Conference. The paper provided an opportunity to share the best practice knowledge and expertise learned through the Hughenden Airport project with industry peers.
