Cairns Aquarium Façade Revealed

1st November 2016

The Cairns Aquarium façade was today revealed as the final exterior wall panels were installed by the FKG Group, completing the ground and first floors of the iconic CBD project.

The 1st of November will be a date that is remembered for more than a horse race as the final pre-cast concrete panels are lifted into place at the Cairns Aquarium. Once in place these panels will complete the second level of the three-story building and provide Cairns locals with their first indication of what the building façade will look like prior to the installation of the 18 metre x 11.5 metre blue glass atrium entrance.

The locally manufactured steel reinforced concrete panels ranging from 4.5 to 5.5 metres high will be added to the existing first floor panels on the Lake St and Florence St side of the building over the course of two days. It is a technically difficult process that uses two cranes to tilt and then lift each 8 to 10-ton precast panel into position by the FKG Group. The construction team are ensuring that the delicate operation is undertaken while ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow and the safety of pedestrians who are walking by the site.

FKG Group’s Senior Project Manager, Mark Pengilly said, “The building’s façade is now essentially complete as a structure, revealing the unique shape of the building that will house the aquarium’s exhibits. Just as the previous panel sequences were planned, the activities over the last few days have produced a strongly co-ordinated and safety focused result.”

The project has passed the halfway point of construction and is due for completion in April 2017.
