20th January 2017
On Friday 20th January, the Jellicoe Street Bridge, constructed by the FKG Group, was renamed the Jim Scanlan Bridge after former North Toowoomba resident, Jim Scanlan, who advocated for the bridge to be upgraded from a timber footbridge to concrete bridge in the 1950’s.
In 2011, the concrete bridge, connecting East and West Toowoomba, that Mr. Scanlan had fought for was destroyed by devastating floods. In 2012, the Toowoomba Regional Council awarded the reconstruction of the bridge to the FKG Group, and the project was completed that same year.
Following the renaming ceremony, a dedication was held in honour of late FKG Group team member Francis ‘Frogie’ Piechon who worked on the project as a Site Supervisor and passed away in 2014.
Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio was joined by Gary Gardner, Executive Chairman of the FKG Group, Adam Enders, Senior Estimator for the FKG Group, former FKG Group team member, Murray Peacock and Mary Piechon, and her two sons to mark the occasion.
