Hillmans Transport engaged the FKG Group to manage the development of a new facility in Toowoomba. The development scope included assisting with site selection and acquisition, facilitating the development approvals process, coordinating detailed design and consultant engagement, and preparing the project for construction – carried out by GFG Projects.
Hillmans required a facility that could support both their growing fleet and expanding office functions. The final development comprised a 1,500m² commercial-grade workshop and office facility, supported by 18,500m² of heavy-duty concrete hardstand. The site also includes a refuelling area and integrated environmental controls, including storm water quality improvement devises.
From the outset, durability and long-term performance were key design considerations. The hardstand area, which was expected to experience high-frequency heavy vehicle traffic, was originally proposed as gravel. However, the FKG Group Developments team worked collaboratively with the client and contractor to identify and implement a more resilient solution – upgrading the surface to concrete with a specialised protective coating to reduce wear and long-term maintenance. This approach significantly increased the asset’s lifespan and was well received by the client.
In addition to core building and hardstand works, the development included car parking, landscaping, and coordination of all hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, fire, and security services – delivering a fully integrated turnkey solution.
Despite experiencing an unprecedented volume of rainfall throughout the construction phase, the early planning and streamlined approvals coordinated by the FKG Group Developments team helped mitigate weather-related delays. With all statutory requirements and certifications accounted for in advance, the project proceeded smoothly through to completion.
The delivery of the Hillmans Transport facility is a testament to the benefits of early development involvement – combining FKG’s in-house development and design expertise with our builder-led delivery partners to ensure a functional, durable, and fit-for-purpose solution tailored to the transport industry.
