Jilalan Wagon Overhaul Facility

FKG was engaged by Aurizon for the design and construction of a 7,500m² Wagon Overhaul Facility at Jilalan, Sarina, following early contractor involvement and civil works. Delivered under a cost savings share GMP arrangement, the final contract price was reduced through collaborative design efficiencies.

The facility includes repair bays, paint booths, grit blasters, bogie wash, inspection pit, overhead cranes, offices, amenities, and a heavy-duty hardstand. Located within a live rail yard, FKG implemented detailed safety and traffic management plans to ensure uninterrupted rail operations. Specialist equipment and complex services were coordinated and procured early to mitigate delays.

Despite challenges with ground conditions, remote location, and client-supplied equipment integration, the project was delivered to a high standard.

Upon completion a separate 300m² locomotive wash facility was also constructed under a separate Construct Only contract, featuring a suspended rail line, hydrowash equipment, and wastewater trenching.
