Shoalwater Bay Training Area Remediation

The FKG Group, in a joint venture with Downer EDi, were appointed by the Department of Defence as Managing Contractor to deliver a major upgrade to the Shoalwater Bay Training Area, located approximately 80km north of Rockhampton.

The project was comprised of eight distinct stages, including the replacement of the Urban Operations Training Facility, construction of a new 1,000-person camp, upgrades to Williamson and Samuel Hill Airfields, a new field hospital, and improvements to Dingo Drive, beach landing sites, and creek crossing drainage structures.

Environmental preservation was prioritised due to the site’s location within a World Heritage Area and overlapping jurisdictions. Construction activities were scheduled around ongoing military operations to minimise disruption. A local industry workshop ensured design feasibility aligned with regional capabilities, enabling the project to exceed its targets with 84% of total spend directed to local content and 15.7% Indigenous procurement achieved against a 2% benchmark.
