The FKG Group’s civil team were engaged by Sunwater to complete upgrade works for the Thuraggi Channel in Central Queensland. The team designed and constructed a solution to reduce backward erosion, eliminate seepage, and ensure an acceptable factor of safety for embankment stability.

The project scope included dewatering of the channel and installation of a well point dewatering system, provision of a four metre diameter RCP pipeline extension for a distance of forty metres downstream from the end of the existing culverts, as well as the construction of a transition structure for the existing dissipater.

In addition, the team were required to backfill around the extended conduit section, construct an outlet structure at the end of the culverts, install rockfill mattresses at the conduit exit for scour control, and install vibrating wire piezometers to allow future monitoring of groundwater levels.

Meticulous scheduling and risk management planning was required to successfully complete construction works at a low storage level, with the potential for Beardmore Dam to fill rapidly.

This formed a part of Sunwater’s essential repair work at EJ Beardmore Dam to ensure the safety and integrity of the dam structure, and secure long-term water supplies for the area’s irrigation and urban customers.
