FKG were engaged by the Queensland Department of Education for the design and construction of a new special school at Coomera on the Gold Coast. The scope included an administration and resource centre, two-storey general learning area blocks, hospitality and amenities facilities, sports hall, external works, carpark, play areas, oval, and perimeter fencing and retaining walls. A bus shelter, storage shed, covered ramp, and grounds care building were also delivered.
FKG’s design review process identified a potential safety risk involving the spatial arrangement of handrails, fencing, and roofing that could enable access to elevated surfaces. This insight allowed the design to be amended early, eliminating this risk to the school.
Retaining walls positioned over a sewer easement also required collaboration with local authorities to redesign the carpark and relocate the easement, avoiding delays.
