FKG were engaged to design and construct a new regional depot to support Mackay’s expanding operational needs. The project spanned two adjoining precincts, incorporating administration facilities, storage and maintenance buildings, truck wash‑down bays, gravel storage bins and smaller service structures across an 83,150m² site.
Record rainfall created ongoing challenges, requiring regular pumping and careful planning to maintain progress while protecting the nearby tidal river system from runoff. The project also integrated sustainable design initiatives, including extensive solar installation and rainwater harvesting systems positioned throughout the precinct to reduce operational demand.
Construction sequencing was adapted to suit prolonged wet conditions, with roof structures completed early to allow internal works to proceed. The resulting facility provided a purpose‑built, efficient operational hub with environmentally responsible features.
