The FKG Civil Team was engaged by Augility to complete the Ross Island Barracks Hardstand and Landship Crane Project in Townsville. This work involved the demolition and reconstruction of the hardstand and boat ramp, recommissioning of the existing cathodic protection system and the replacement of the existing landship simulator crane.
A large portion of the success of the hardstand was the team’s ability to shorten the expected program, significantly reducing the impact to Defence capability. The supply and installation of a new Italian crane involved designing a custom-built control stand for the Landship Training Simulator.
There were a number of unique challenges on this project including redesigning the pavement to reduce material disposal to less than 1% of the original scope and designing the control stand working through long delays due to COVID 19 and the crane coming all the way from Italy.
