Tailem Bend BESS

FKG was engaged for the design and construction of a Battery Energy Storage System adjacent to the existing Tailem Bend Solar Project in South Australia. The installation supports the proposed Stage 2 Solar Project by providing Fast Frequency Response and ancillary services to the National Electricity Market.

The scope included battery systems, power conversion units, transformers, control systems, and hybrid power plant controllers. Extensive early design collaboration with the client led to significant cost savings and improved constructability. Variations during delivery required adaptive design responses, including dry fire pump works and rectification of client-supplied components. Construction involved complex services installations within a sensitive operational environment, managed through detailed planning and consistent stakeholder engagement. Program adjustments were made to accommodate delays with the specialised equipment procurement.

Daily site coordination and weekly stakeholder meetings ensured alignment and transparency throughout delivery. The project was completed in line with the revised program.
